SO… What do I need to know?
Andrea is always available for questions but hopefully some of these FAQs can help shed some light on the what’s of Uniquely Possible Therapy Services!
As unique as our clients, occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that specializes in assessing and treating the specific physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and sensory needs of our clients by using everyday activities to promote participation, facilitate independence, and enhance one’s quality of life.
Occupations refer to the tasks we perform and roles we assume in our daily lives that ‘occupy’ our time. For younger children, playing, school work and chores occupy much of their day. As we grown into adolescents and young adults, our focus may shift to gaining/ keeping employment, developing leisure skills, navigating the waters of relationships, and building the skills needed to live independently.
By assessing the “whole-person”, collaborating with the client and their support system (parents, teachers, employers), and client-centered goal setting, Uniquely Possible Therapy Services believes in the power of overcoming barriers and achieving life goals. Private and small group sessions are customized to the client’s needs as a student, family member, friend, worker, significant-other, home-maker, and vital member of their community. Not only are OTs qualified to work with individuals recovering from acute injuries or set-backs (i.e. post-concussion, TBI, post-surgery, etc), our training in development along the life span allows us to address challenges experienced amongst a wide range of diagnoses or deficits. These may include: physical or mental health disorders, Autism, ADHD, CP, Down syndrome, chromosomal or other biological differences, vision deficits, struggles in handwriting, problems with executive functioning, and vocational support needs just to name a few. In short, if you or your child feel there are barriers to participation in daily occupations or gaining the independence of for a fulfilling future, a conversation with an OT may be beneficial.
Formal diagnosis may help clients/families/practitioners understand causes, common characteristics, and a trajectory for expectations of a diagnosis. Similarly, these diagnoses are often necessary for financial coverage for services through insurance companies. However, it is not imperative to have a “diagnosis” to receive occupational therapy. In fact, an OT’s primary goal is provide support for their clients in any area of occupation where dysfunction is impeding their independence or satisfaction in their performance.
While Uniquely Possible Therapy Services does not currently accept insurance, your therapist is able to provide documentation or monthly superbills/ itemized receipts to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement upon request. Coverage is dependent on your plan and reimbursement is not guaranteed. If a referral form from a physician is needed, please let us know.
Email or call Andrea at andrea@uniquelypossible.com or 404-543-4229 for evaluation & session rates.
Frequency of services is fluid and dependent on the client’s abilities, goals, expectations/ timeline for meeting goals, effort, and scheduling needs as well as the scheduling availability of the therapist. Most clients are seen weekly for 52-minute sessions with the remaining time used for documentation and correspondence with the client/ family for carryover of skills. There is not a standard duration of service (i.e. number of sessions) but rather communication of needs, progress, and expectations is an integral part of the therapy process.
Since client occupations occur in a variety of locations, the current model of Uniquely Possible Therapy Services is to meet the client where the need is present. Sessions can be carried out in the client’s school, home, place of employment, or community settings for which the client’s goals align (within a 10-mile radius of Woodstock). While a brick-and-mortar location is a future goal for Uniquely Possible Therapy Services, there is an option for the therapist to offer services carried out at a local pediatric therapy clinic in Woodstock on specific days and times – especially if sensory needs are a priority.
